Berets

Wool and cotton berets in black, khaki, red, green and blue, with head sizes on the listings so you can find one that sits snug, plus two flat caps for a change.

Picking a beret that fits your head

A beret only looks right when it sits snug, so check your head size before you choose a colour. Measure around your head just above the eyebrows and compare it with the listing: the wool beret fits 58 cm to 60 cm, the blue beret 56 to 58 cm, and the military beret hat adjusts from 55 to 60 cm. The red beret comes in sizes S to XL. Belts, watches and caps to wear with it are in our military accessories.

Wool does most of the work in winter. The black military beret is knitted from 96% wool or more and handles light rain and cold wind, while the wool beret hat, at 90% wool, keeps your head warm without turning clammy. The red beret is 100% wool with a black leather inner band. On the military beret hat, a cotton and polyester blend keeps its shape over time. When the wind is cold enough that your face needs covering too, a balaclava under a hood will do more than any beret.

Colours, badges and how to wear it

Black is the most common colour, then khaki, green, red and blue. The wool beret alone comes in nine shades, including navy, sky blue, wine red and pink. The red beret hat has black trim and a decorative badge on the side, and the red beret carries a machine-embroidered military-style badge. The sailor-style military beret hat comes in red, burgundy, black or navy blue, each with a gold or silver option.

Wear it pulled down to one side, with the band level across your forehead. The leather edge band on the black military beret and the cord at the back of the red beret hat help it stay there. The black military beret goes with a uniform or with everyday clothes, and the plain black beret works for a formal event as well as a casual night out.

Flat caps and milder days

Two flat caps sit with the berets for when you want a short peak. The mens flat cap is 100% cotton and adjusts from 55 to 60 cm; the green summer flat cap is cut like a British painter's cap. On milder days, the metal eyelets on the blue beret and the two air holes on the military beret hat let some heat out. Under a hot Australian sun, though, a beret leaves your face and neck exposed, so reach for a wide brim hat instead.
