Desert boots are cut for hot, dry ground, where airflow and a sole that bites matter more than a sealed upper. Every pair here rises above the ankle, and some add a padded collar that holds the foot steady on loose or broken ground. In build they sit close to our military boots, in sandier colours like beige and khaki.
The upper is the main difference, so check it before you choose. The lightweight desert boots use cowhide velour that bends without whitening, and the desert combat boots have a high cowhide suede upper. On the mens desert boots the upper is PU, which takes knocks well, while the desert tan combat boots mix Oxford fabric and suede with TPU and metal lace hooks. For lower, softer footwear on marked trails, look through our hiking boots as well.
Heat is what wears you down in the outback, so look closely at the venting. The military desert boots have metal eyelets through the side of the forefoot to let hot air out, and the mens desert boots use a vented structure that stops the sauna effect. Soles are rubber with deep or wide lugs, and the desert combat boots grip on rock and hardpack as well as soaked ground. None of these is sold as waterproof. Treat them as dry-weather boots and keep another pair for a wet winter.
After a long, hot day your feet want out fast, which is where the full-length zip on the military desert boots helps: the pair comes off in one movement once you're back at camp. That same pair has an EVA insole that absorbs shock from the first wear. Sizes are European, from 38 up to 47 depending on the style. Black comes in every model and beige in most.
