Emergency Blankets

Emergency blanket options for the glovebox or the daypack, plus bivvy bags, reflective tarps and insulated blankets for cold nights at camp.

Picking an emergency blanket by size and weight

An emergency blanket only helps if it's with you, so start with how much room and weight you can spare. The foil emergency blanket comes in gold or silver and in two sizes, 1.3 m x 2.1 m or 1.6 m x 2.1 m, and the wider one leaves more to tuck around your shoulders. Either one folds small enough to sit with the rest of your survival gear without taking up much space.

There's also a single silver foil sheet at 130 x 210 cm, light enough to keep in the glovebox. Use it as a rescue sheet, or rig it as a makeshift shelter on a hike. If you're putting together a first aid kit for the car, a foil sheet takes almost no room next to the bandages.

Bivvy bags and thermal tarps

A flat sheet has to be held in place, and that's where the next two come in. The emergency bivvy bag is one you climb into. Its PE film is water resistant and keeps you off damp ground, while the camo print stays low-key in the bush. At 120 g, it packs down small enough to hold in your hand. The thermal insulating tarp is heavier at 400 g and measures 151 x 213 cm, enough for a full bivvy pitch. One face is aluminium to throw body heat back at you. The other is orange, so you can be spotted from a distance.

Insulated blankets for camp

Not every blanket in this range is foil. The camping blanket has a 20D ripstop nylon outer that sheds water and dirt, with a soft polyester lining so it never feels like a tarp against you. It weighs 750 g and is made to insulate below 10°C, which suits alpine trips and winter camps. You can machine wash it. The puffer blanket has a polyester taffeta shell and folds to 30 x 15 cm. There's room for two under it, and it comes in five sizes. The camping quilt puts a hollow-fibre fill inside a nylon shell that's windproof and water repellent.

Foil pieces come in gold or silver, while the insulated blankets run through blue, green, orange, grey and black. A blanket keeps you warm while you wait things out, and a map compass helps you find your way once you can walk out.
