A camping mattress does two jobs: it cushions you from rocks and roots, and it puts a layer between you and the cold ground. The type that suits you depends on how far you carry it. For car camping you can take the thick, roomy ones, while on foot every gram of weight and pack size counts. It is the base of the bed, and the rest of our sleeping gear sits on top of it.
Self-inflating styles have a foam core that draws in air once the valve is open. The self-inflating sleeping mat needs no pump at all, with a 21D foam core, a 183 x 61 cm surface and a pillow built into the head end, in green, blue or two camouflage prints. You will find all of them, including a queen size that sleeps three, in our self inflating mattress collection.
An inflatable sleeping mat packs smaller than foam and gives more height. Most of the air mats here have a foot pump built in, so you press with your foot instead of puffing into a valve. The ultralight mat is 190 × 60 cm and weighs 510g, and the lightweight one weighs 590g with an inflatable pillow at the head. Side sleepers who want more under the hip can go for one of the 10 cm mats, or the inflatable camping sleeping mat at 15 cm.
Foam is the plain choice: nothing to pump up and no valve to look after. The camping foam sleeping mat has 2 cm of IXPE foam backed with aluminium film, which acts as a thermal and damp barrier on cold earth, and it folds like an accordion. It is bulkier than an air mat, so it usually rides strapped to the outside of the pack.
If you share a tent, one wide mattress beats two mats that drift apart in the night. The double camping mattress gives a 200 x 120 cm surface for 1150 g, and the self-inflating double is 196 × 125 × 9 cm and takes up to 200 kg, enough for a couple and their rucksacks. Colours run from navy, grey and green to orange and beige. Warmth comes from the mat and the bag together, so match what you lie on to a sleeping bag made for the season.
