Matching a military watch to the work you do

A military watch has to suit the days you wear it, so start with where it's going. On site or in the shed, a digital display gives you more than the time. The tactical digital watch has a stopwatch and alarm on a rubber strap that takes knocks and water, and the military digital watch adds a backlit display with a night mode. Water ratings and straps

Read the water rating closely. The green military watch and the tactical digital watch are both water resistant to 50 m, and the green one is fine for swimming. The military digital watch is marked 5 bar on its dial. The tactical survival watch copes with rain and the shower, but it is not a dive watch, so take it off before you head into the surf.

On a watch you wear every day, the strap usually goes first. Nylon turns up on the mens field watch and on the nylon strap watch. The green military watch pairs nylon with carbon fibre. Analogue, digital or both

Analogue faces are quick to read at a glance. The nylon strap watch is low profile, 3.8 cm across and about 1 cm thick, so it sits flat under a shirt cuff. The mens dress watch goes the other way, with a gold-tone case, Roman numerals and a sun and moon display. If you can't choose, the analogue digital watch puts a stopwatch, countdown timer and automatic calendar behind mineral glass.
