Good hiking pants start with the fabric, because the cut matters less once you are caught in a shower or wading a creek. Polyester and nylon blends shed light rain and dry quickly, which cotton will not do. The quick dry hiking pants use a synthetic fibre that dries in minutes, and the stretch hiking pants add elastane so the fabric follows you up steps and over rocks. The breathable hiking pants have a reinforced crotch and knees, where seams take the most strain on a climb. They pair easily with the rest of our hiking clothes.
If you want pockets and a tougher weave, look at the cargo styles. The cargo hiking pants mix cotton and polyester, with tapered legs and pre-shaped knees. The ripstop tactical pants have a grid weave that resists tearing, a water-shedding finish and ten pockets for tools, a phone and paperwork. The baggy cargo pants are all cotton with a straight leg, comfortable around camp on dry days. For more of them, browse our cargo pants.
Wet days give you two options. Waterproof over pants go on top of your usual pair, with fully taped seams and a water column listed on the product, while the rain pants for hiking have zips and press studs at the hem so they slide on over your boots. If you would rather wear one layer, the waterproof trekking pants stretch four ways and stay windproof from autumn through winter.
When it gets properly cold, go for a lined pair. The fleece lined hiking pants put dense fleece against your legs under a nylon and polyester face. Among the mens hiking pants, the softshell pair is lined for winter and cut for walking or outdoor work. The warm waterproof pants go further, with fleece inside, reinforced knees and seat, and vent zips on each thigh to dump heat on a climb.
Hot, humid walks call for less fabric. The lightweight hiking pants use a water-repellent nylon you barely feel on your legs. The wide leg pair is softer, in a bamboo-based fabric with built-in stretch. If mornings start cool and afternoons heat up, the mens zip off pants turn into shorts at the knee zips. Black, green and grey lead the colours, with khaki, blue and brown in several styles. Come winter, a light pair still works with thermals underneath on the coldest mornings.
