A parka is the coat to reach for once a jumper and a light jacket stop being enough, longer in the body and built around a hood. Most styles here pair a polyester or nylon shell with a fleece or pile lining, and that lining does most of the work. On a snow trip or a winter night at an outback camp, it matters more than the shell. Underneath, light layers from our hiking clothes let you open the front once you warm up.
The hood is where these coats differ most. The N3B parka and the black women's parka both have a hood edged with a fluffy trim. On the snorkel parka the fur collar comes off when the weather eases, and on the parka coat for men the whole fur-trimmed hood is removable. The winter parka for men goes the other way, with a hood fixed to the collar so it covers your neck. For a shorter jacket on milder days, look at our bomber jackets.
Warmth sits mostly in the lining. The hooded parka has a dense fleece lining all the way round, plus elastic cuffs and a high collar that closes with press studs. The winter parka for men is fleece-lined through the sleeves as well as the body, and its polyester lining handles damp better than cotton. For an army parka look, one jacket pairs shoulder epaulettes and button-flap chest pockets with a thick pile lining. The camo puffer is quilted, with a cotton fill. On the outside, the snorkel parka has a nylon outer that resists snags, while a few styles use a water-repellent or water-resistant polyester shell that copes with showers. In heavy rain, add a proper rain layer on top.
The long parka is cut long to stop icy wind getting in, and the long puffer jackets come in versions for men and women. If you want room to move, look for the 3D cut on the hooded parka, which follows the body, or the roomy winter style that leaves space for layers underneath. Black, green and blue are the most common colours. Khaki, brown, beige and camo turn up on some styles, and one has a bright pink faux fur trim. Sizes run from XS to 4XL depending on the style. A green or camo parka sits well with our camo pants and boots.
