Sleeping Gear

Sleeping gear for nights out bush or on the walking track: sleeping bags, self-inflating mats and mattresses, camp stretchers, liners and camping pillows to build a full bed.

Sleeping gear for the car, the camp and the track

Sleeping gear is easier to sort out if you build the bed from the ground up. Cold soaks up from the earth all night, so what you lie on counts as much as what you pull over you. The first layer is a self-inflating mat or a camping mattress, and the range runs from slim mats that roll into a pack to thick inflatable beds for the back of the car.

Then choose the bag. Our sleeping bags include ultralight styles for long walks and winter bags for frosty nights in the high country or a cold outback camp. If you camp from a 4WD, weight hardly matters and you can take the bulkier, warmer bag. On foot, pack size comes first.

Off the ground on a camp stretcher

A camp stretcher keeps you clear of damp soil and stones. The lightweight model has an aluminium frame with taut Oxford fabric and takes up to 150 kg. The fold up camp bed is wider at 194 x 64 cm, and its backrest sets in 4 positions, so you can sit up in the evening and lie flat later. Air moves under any stretcher, which is why a mat on top helps on cool nights. If an old stretcher has a torn bed, the camouflage fabric in the range can give it a second life.

Liners, wearable blankets and pillows

A sleeping bag liner keeps sweat and dirt off the bag, and on warm nights you can sleep in the liner alone. The summer liner in polyester pongee weighs 270g and suits nights between 5°C and 15°C. For mountain huts and hostels there are rectangular fleece and sheet liners, while the ultralight liner with a hood weighs 128 g and goes in the washing machine. The insulated poncho and the outdoor blanket can be worn round camp after dark, then opened flat over you once you turn in.

Last comes something for your head. The inflatable hiking pillow weighs 100g and the backpacking pillow in velour and TPU 106g, so neither takes up much room. The blow up camping pillow is tougher PVC at 300 g and comes with a storage bag. Any of the light ones also works as a travel pillow on a long drive or a flight.
