Hammock Tents

A tent hammock gets you off wet, rocky or sloping ground. Most hang from tree straps and carabiners, and several add a mosquito net or a tarp to keep the rain off.

Sleeping off the ground in a tent hammock

A tent hammock earns its place wherever the ground works against you: wet leaf litter, rock, roots, or a slope with nowhere flat to lie. Find two solid trees, clip in, and you sleep above the mud and the ants. Most pack down small enough to ride in your pack next to the rest of your camping gear.

The fabric on most models is 210T parachute nylon, light and breathable. One is said to stay cool on warm nights and dry fast, which counts in the tropical north. The hanging model and one of the two-person hammocks use 70D nylon instead, and the covered camping hammock is spun nylon, soft but hard wearing. If you camp on open country with no trees in sight, one of our tents makes more sense.

Bug nets and cover from the rain

Mosquitoes and midges decide how well you sleep up north and along the coast. The army model and the covered camping hammock have the net built in. On the lightweight camping hammock it comes off for hot nights with few bugs about. The two-person hammock with a mosquito net goes further, with a mesh tight enough to stop midges as well.

A hammock on its own leaves you open to the sky. The hammock tent with rainfly can be ordered as the hammock or as the tarp, and that tarp has a PU coating. Another model comes with a green or blue tarp option in Oxford fabric, silver coated against rain and UV. Hang the tarp just above the hammock, its edge low on the weather side.

Weight, length and colours

Several models hold up to 200 kg, which covers one person with kit or two sitting together, and one two-person model goes to 300 kg. Lengths run from 260 to 290 cm. Lie on a slight diagonal and your back stays flatter. On a cool night in the high country, moving air under the hammock draws heat out of your back, so take a sleeping mat to lie on inside it.

The hanging model works a little differently: it doubles as a swing or a small tent, then unzips back into a plain tree hammock. Colours lean towards camouflage and greens that sit quietly in the bush, with sky blue, pink, black, grey and orange for the backyard or a festival. For a base camp that stays put for a week, look through our army tent range.
