Monoculars

Monoculars for a quick look at a far ridge, a bird in the canopy or the bush around camp, from a 44 g pocket compact to a 60 mm zoom.

Why carry a monocular

A monocular is one half of a pair of binoculars, so it weighs less and comes out of a pocket faster when something moves in the scrub. The lightest here is a 7x18 compact at 44 g that fits in a shirt pocket, and the close focus model weighs 83 g with a 16 mm objective. The trade-off is comfort. One eye does all the work, so for long sessions watching a paddock, a pair of binoculars is easier on your eyes.

Plenty of people carry one as a second optic, to check a far ridge without unpacking anything bigger. The wider range of glass and night gear sits under our hunting optics.

Magnification and lens size

Two numbers on each model tell you most of what you need. Magnification says how close the image looks, and the objective lens size says how much light gets in. The compact 7x18 stays steady in the hand because its magnification is low. The monocular telescope has a 42 mm objective, and you notice the extra light once the sun drops. The high power model goes further again, with a 60 mm objective and a 25-75x zoom. Rest it on something solid at the top of that range, because the image shakes more the further you zoom.

Prisms, coatings and glass

Inside, the prism makes a visible difference. The birding monocular and the telescope both use BAK4, which keeps the picture sharp to the edges and lets more light through, and so does the high power zoom. The close focus model uses BK7, a standard glass that still gives a clear image in full daylight. Coatings cut stray reflections. The birding model pairs real glass lenses with a fully multi-coated finish and comes in bronze or gold. If you watch from one spot, the spotting scope comes with a tripod and has eye relief that works with glasses on. Its body is splash resistant.

A monocular for after dark

One model is made for the night. It uses 8x optical magnification instead of a digital zoom that breaks the picture into pixels. It also records 1080P video to a TF card of up to 256 GB, so you can leave it filming the track past camp. If you'd rather have both eyes on the job after sunset, see our night vision goggles.
