A camp stretcher lifts you off damp ground, stones and roots, which matters at a base camp you stay at for a week. Think of it as the frame of your bed, with the rest of our sleeping gear going on top. The lightweight model and the portable model both take up to 150 kg on an aluminium frame, and the taut Oxford fabric gives firm support. On the portable one the legs are set in a triangle and lever locks hold the bed tight, so it does not sag through the night.
Sleeping off the ground has one catch. Air moves under the fabric, and on a cold night in the high country you feel it through your back. Lay the stretcher mattress or a sleeping mat on the frame, then add a sleeping bag made for the season.
If you carry your bed any distance, go light. The lightweight stretcher folds down into a cylinder bag, dries quickly and works on soft or hard ground, so it suits bivvy trips and light hiking. The portable model packs into a 55 x 14 cm carry bag that slides into the boot beside the esky. For a car camp where space is no problem, the fold up model is wider at 194 x 64 cm, with room for taller and bigger sleepers. Its backrest sets in 4 positions, so you can sit up after dinner and lie flat to sleep. Colours run from khaki and green to black, grey and yellow, depending on the model.
The camp stretcher mattress is filled with short-pile plush cotton and holds on with four triangular corner pockets that slip over the frame, plus an adjustable strap across the middle. It comes in three sizes, so measure your stretcher bed before you order. The reclining camp chair works as a chair by day and turns into a bed at night, and it suits an afternoon at the beach as much as camp.
An old frame with a torn bed does not have to go to the tip. The camouflage fabric is water-resistant polyester in a twill weave, cut at 100 x 150 cm, so you can re-cover a tired stretcher yourself. On warm nights when a full bag is too much, sleep on top in a sleeping bag liner and keep a blanket within reach.
