Winter Sleeping Bags

Cold-night bags with hollow-fibre, duck down, goose down or cotton fill, in mummy and envelope shapes, for frosty camps in the High Country and clear outback nights.

Reading the temperatures on a winter sleeping bag

A winter sleeping bag usually lists more than one temperature, and the one to plan your trip around is comfort. Limit and extreme sit lower and describe getting through a cold night, not sleeping well through it. The cold weather bag, for example, gives -15°C comfort and -20°C limit, and the winter camping bag lists comfort and extreme figures for each weight. For milder seasons, look through our sleeping bags.

In the High Country, or on a clear desert night in the outback, cold ground pulls heat out through the bottom of the bag. A warmer bag will not fix that alone, so lay a mat from our sleeping gear underneath.

Hollow fibre, down or cotton fill

Hollow-fibre polyester fills the sub zero bag, the camo bag, the winter camping bag and the bag for camping in winter. These suit a car camp, where bulk and weight matter less: the winter camping bag reaches 3.5 kg in its warmest version. The camo bag's 170T polyester resists moisture and abrasion, and its heaviest weights go down to -20°C.

Down gives you warmth for less weight. The duck down styles use 90% white duck down in a 320T nylon shell with a heavy-duty zip, from 1300 g in total, and two goose down bags are in the mix as well. Cotton is the third route. The cotton lined bag has 700g of cotton-silk filling and a washed cotton lining, and suits dry, cool nights more than snow. The 3 season bag also uses cotton fill, with zips at the foot end that let heat out when the night turns milder.

Shape, size and zip side

Mummy cuts such as the cold weather bag hug your body, leaving less air to warm. Envelope and rectangular styles give you room to turn over, and the camo bag opens flat on its full zip to make a blanket or ground sheet. The winter camping bag comes up to 230 x 90 cm. On the sub zero bag you can pick a left or right zip. Colours run from blue, green and black to orange and green camouflage.

Carrying your bed into the alps on foot changes the maths, because every gram counts once it is on your back. For those trips, compare packed sizes in our ultralight sleeping bags before you choose.
