A field jacket is a mid-weight outer layer you buy for its pockets and collar as much as for warmth. The shape most people picture is the M65 field jacket. The one in this collection has a high collar that folds up and stands, a zip behind a double row of buttons, drawstrings to adjust the fit and two large flap pockets on the front. It comes in army green, black, digital desert and a shade listed simply as military, in sizes XS to 3XL. Underneath, a shirt and pants from our hiking clothes make a full outfit for a day in the bush.
For the same look in a shorter cut, the cotton bomber jacket is made as an M65 style field jacket from a 60% cotton and 40% polyester blend. Its hems are ribbed with a little stretch, the seams are reinforced and the front closes with a dual zip. You can get it in khaki, black, blue, grey or green. More short styles sit with our bomber jackets.
Fabric is the main thing that separates these jackets. The women's field jacket is cotton, hard-wearing and simple to wash after a day outdoors. It's shaped through the shoulder and waist instead of hanging straight, a drawcord pulls it in at the waist, and its four eyeleted pockets are roomy.
If showers are likely, look at the black M65 jacket. It keeps the familiar shape in a water-resistant polyester, with a hood rolled away inside the high collar and a hook-and-loop tab to close it. The zip front is backed by snap buttons, the cuffs sit close and the waist runs a drawstring. Besides black, it comes in green and jungle.
The army bomber jacket is the one for cold weather. A fleece lining sits under its polyester and cotton shell, so it works through winter, and the outside carries military style insignia in black, military green or khaki. With the other styles, size so a jumper fits underneath if you plan to layer on frosty mornings. For long walks in the hills, something lighter from our hiking jackets may suit you better.
