A puffer jacket keeps you warm with quilted pockets of fill, and how much fill you need depends on how cold your winter gets. For coastal mornings and a night at the footy, the lightweight jacket for men is fully quilted in water-resistant polyester, with a stand collar and elastic cuffs that stop the wind. Inland frosts and camp nights call for the heavier mens winter style, with a nylon shell that blocks the wind. Either one zips over a jumper and the rest of our hiking clothes.
Fill is the other choice. Several styles here use white duck down. The down jacket with an adjustable hood pairs it with a breathable, water-resistant shell and a close-fitting cut. For the coldest trips, the mens puffer jacket in black has a coated nylon shell that resists water and tearing, a built-in hood and a high collar you can remove. Others use a synthetic quilted fill or, on the fur hooded style, a cotton-padded lining. For the in-between months, a bomber jacket is lighter and far less bulky.
A puffer vest keeps your core warm and leaves your arms to move, so it works under a shell or on its own on a crisp autumn day. The hooded vest has a fleece-lined, quilted interior and a hood you can take off. The green vest, also in khaki, has a water-repellent shell for light rain only, and the womens black vest has a polyester outer that does not keep rain out, so carry a shell when it turns wet. The mens goose down vest closes with concealed buttons under a V-neck.
The womens puffer jacket with a fur hood has a faux fur collar that works like a scarf and a drawstring at the waist to shape the fit. The cream vest is cut slim for women, its down held in stitched compartments that limit cold spots. The kids puffer jacket is polyester with a hood that pulls in snug, sized by age from two to six years.
Black turns up on most styles, with army green, khaki and brown for a field look, and royal blue, red, white or purple if you want colour. The hooded puffer jacket gives a quilted winter coat a military look. On a camp morning that warms up by lunch, a vest over a t-shirt and cargo shorts will do until the sun drops.
