A head torch puts light wherever you look and leaves both hands for pitching the tent or working in the engine bay. Most models here are rechargeable, some by USB-C and others by Micro USB. Many pair a focused LED with a wide COB panel, so you can switch between the track ahead and the job in front of you. The professional model adds a telescopic zoom and a USB output that tops up a phone or GPS. If you prefer a light you hold, browse our hand torches.
Brighter is not always better. On full power, close work throws glare back into your eyes, so a low setting matters as much as the top one. If you read or cook by it, look for at least two levels. The red light model has high, low, flashing and red settings, and red keeps your night vision without dazzling whoever shares the tent. One hiking model switches on and off with a wave of the hand, handy when your fingers are greasy. These lights also sit with lanterns and chargers in our torches and solar gear.
Fit decides whether you keep wearing it. Most models use an adjustable elastic band, and the rechargeable head torch with anodised aluminium lamp heads has a soft one for long walks. The work model carries one, two or three light strips on its band for an even spread over a bench. The children's headlamp comes as a cat, frog, penguin, lion and other animals, with an elastic band sized for small heads. For winter dawns or alpine trips, the knitted beanie has a rechargeable light that unclips so you can wash the hat, in colours from black and navy to orange camouflage.
Most of these lights charge from a USB cable, which makes them easy to keep going on a long trip. Lay out one of our portable solar panels at camp during the day and plug your light in before dark.
