Every pair of binoculars carries two numbers, and they tell you most of what you need. The first is magnification and the second is the width of each front lens in millimetres, so a 10x50 brings things ten times closer through 50 mm lenses that gather far more light than a 10x22. Bigger glass is brighter at dawn and dusk, and heavier too: the 50 mm bird watching pair weighs 890 g. For trail cameras, scopes and the rest of your field kit, see our hunting optics.
With 8x42 binoculars you get a wider, steadier view that suits birds moving through scrub. 10x42 binoculars bring a distant animal closer but show every shake of your hands. Two of the pairs come in either 8x or 10x, so you pick on the product page. Above 10x, rest your elbows on something firm: the 12x42 and the 20x50 pick up detail a long way off, but the image moves each time you breathe. None of these see in the dark, and for that you need our night vision goggles.
Game tends to move early and late, so brightness counts for more than raw power. The 10x50 combines BAK4 prisms with green multi-coating, and its 5 mm exit pupil keeps the picture usable in shaded forest at dusk. It also has a built-in compass for taking a bearing on what you spot, and comes in khaki, green or blue. Most of the other pairs use BAK4 prisms as well. The 8x40 has BAK7 prisms instead, with a phone mount option for photos through the eyepiece.
Compact binoculars give up light for weight. The 10x22 and 10x25 pairs are easy to carry all day and are made for daylight, because they dim well before a 42 mm pair once the sun drops. If you wear glasses, check eye relief: the 50 mm bird watching pair gives 13 mm and suits prescription glasses, while the 12x42 gives 10 mm.
The rest of the collection is polarised sunglasses, in wrap-around, cycling, fishing, driving and camo styles. Their lenses cut glare off water and tarmac, and most carry a UV400 filter. And if binoculars are more than you want around your neck, a monocular does the same job with one eye and less weight.
