Camping Cookware & Stoves

Gas stoves for a solo brew or a group of five, plus nesting pot and pan sets that pack into one bag for the trail or the 4WD.

Choosing a camping stove for the size of your group

The camping stove you want depends on how many people are waiting on a brew. The foldable gas stove is the compact one, sized for three to five people. Its four stainless pot arms and legs fold away into a drawstring bag. For a bigger group, the split-layout stove puts the canister off to one side on a braided hose, so a wide pan sits low on four serrated supports with a wind collar around the flame. Everything else for the campsite is in our camping gear.

If you cook more than you boil, look at the outdoor gas stove in khaki or black. Its five-jet brass burner has a rotary control that turns down to a proper simmer for stews. It packs to 600g in its pouch, so it fits in a pack alongside your tent on a walk-in site.

Pot sets that nest into one bag

Every pot set here nests, so the pieces stack inside each other. The nesting pair weighs just 320 g: a pot and a shallow pan, the nearest thing here to a mess tin. For one or two people, the camping pots and pans set adds a frying pan, utensils and two plastic bowls, and weighs 500g all up. The stainless five-piece set comes to 800 g with two pots, a shallow pan and a lid in a mesh bag. The three-piece set includes a kettle with a pouring spout, and the 900 ml kettle or the 1.6 litre pot can be bought on their own.

Stainless or anodised aluminium

The stainless sets have bare steel on the cooking surfaces, with no coating to wear off after a season over gas. Bare steel lets food catch, so heat the pan before the oil goes in and keep eggs on a medium flame. The set in black, orange or green is hard anodised aluminium, which spreads heat evenly. Handles on every set fold flat for packing, so check they are fully open before you lift a full pot.

Where to set the stove up

These are outdoor stoves. Cook in the open, never inside a tent, a van or an annexe, and keep the burner a few steps from your pop up tent or any other shelter. Flat ground helps, and so does a spot out of the wind. Let the burner cool before it goes back in its bag.
