Womens hiking boots with a mid or ankle-high collar make sense on rocky, uneven tracks, where some hold around the ankle helps on the way down. The ankle support hiking boots combine mesh and leather over a natural rubber sole, and the black hiking boots have a microfibre upper with an ankle-high cut, in black or grey. For a more military look, browse our military boots.
On formed tracks and shorter day walks, a low-cut shoe is lighter on the foot. The hiking sneakers weigh 500 g a pair and have a cushioned heel, and the breathable hiking shoes put an aerated mesh upper over a cotton lining at 220g per foot. You will find more low-cut pairs in our hiking shoes.
Much of the range is built for warm weather. The summer hiking shoes have a breathable microfibre upper with mesh panels for dry days on rocky ground, and their listing says plainly that they will not keep water out. Treat mesh shoes as dry-weather footwear. If light rain is likely, the leather hiking shoes have a water-repellent cowhide upper that copes with a shower, though it is not sealed either.
For mud and wet rock, look at the sole before the upper. The pink hiking shoes have large rubber studs for muddy ground, and the trail hiking shoes a thick lugged rubber sole made for greasy ground and wet rock. Both use mesh to keep air moving, which counts on a hot climb.
When the days get hot, hiking sandals take over. The closed-toe hiking sandals have a rubber cap over the toes and a wraparound cage upper with textile straps that dry quickly. The strappy walking sandals adjust at the rear strap, while the walking sandals close with hook and loop straps at 3 points and are meant for flat, dry paths. The slip on walking shoes skip laces altogether and have a ventilated mesh upper for long walks.
Sizes mostly run from 35 or 36 up to 42, and a few styles go up to 46. One leather boot listing suggests going half a size up if you wear thick hiking socks. Black, grey and pink are the most common colours, with purple, beige and khaki on some styles. For hot, dry country, compare with our desert boots too.
