Hiking sandals earn their place on summer walks where a full boot feels like too much, and on routes where you expect to wade. Many pairs here have a closed toe that keeps stones and knocks off your toes on rocky ground, while a few strappy styles leave more of the foot open for flat paths and town. If the walk means a heavy load over rough country, our military boots are a better match.
Grip depends on the sole. Several pairs use lugged or studded rubber that holds on wet rock and mud, and the TPR soles on some women's styles are made for wet surfaces too. One walking sandal has a flatter patterned tread meant for dry, even paths, so check the sole photo against the walks you do. When you want the same grip with full cover and laces, look at our hiking shoes.
The leather pairs use full-grain or suede cowhide, which takes scuffs on rocky ground, and one of the men's styles dries quickly after you wade through a creek. Mesh and fabric uppers are lighter and let air in, which helps on humid days up north. A ladies' walking sandal sheds water fast after a stream crossing thanks to its technical fabric upper. The comfort sandals use microfibre that dries in a flash, and they weigh 500g per pair.
Straps decide whether a sandal stays put on a slope, so look at how each pair closes. Hook and loop tabs go on and off in seconds, and one women's walking sandal adjusts at three points across the foot. Other styles use an adjustable rear strap, front-locking laces, elastic lacing or a slip-on band in place of laces. Women's sizes mostly start at 35 or 36. One closed toe pair goes down to 30, and the full-grain closed toe sandals for men reach 48.
Colours lean to black, brown and beige, with grey, blue, green and pink on some styles and purple on the cute hiking sandals. Wear them bare or with thin socks on day walks. For multi-day trips with a full pack, move up to our hiking boots.
