These snow boots are made to walk in, so they suit a few days at the snowfields as well as frosty mornings in the high country. Uppers run from cowhide and suede to PU faux leather and Oxford fabric, and almost every pair has a fur, fleece or plush lining. If your cold days are spent in wet scrub more than on snow, compare them with our military boots before you choose.
Laced winter boots give you more hold around the ankle on a long walk. The winter hiking boots have a high collar and full front lacing over a cowhide upper. The snow hiking boots use cowhide as well, with a water-repellent finish, a short-pile plush lining and a lined insole. Think of them as our hiking boots with more warmth inside.
Warmth comes mostly from the lining. The warm snow boots and the womens fur lined snow boots have long, thick fur inside, while the lightweight snow boots and the fleece lined snow boots use synthetic fleece. Thick fleece adds weight: the fleece lined boots come in at 850g a pair, reinforced EVA sole included.
Then look at the tread. Rubber soles with wide lugs, like the one under the faux fur pair with triple-stitched seams, are meant for ice and frozen ground. EVA is lighter and gives more cushion, which is why the lightweight snow boots use an injected EVA sole. For packed snow and icy footpaths, the snow boots with spikes have 8 steel studs set into a treaded EVA sole.
Height decides how much snow gets in over the top. The womens fur lined snow boots have a 20cm upper that covers the lower leg, and the ankle snow boots have a side zip you can do up with gloves on. The fleece lined snow boots close with buckle clips. On the womens winter ankle boots, a faux fur collar sits on top of a thick platform rubber sole.
Black is the most common colour, with brown, grey, blue and army green on several pairs and red or purple on the womens ankle boots. Sizes start at 35 on the womens styles and reach 48 on the laced cowhide boots. When the snow melts and the tracks dry out, our hiking shoes are the lighter pick for spring walks.
