Thermals

Thermals for the snow, cold nights at camp and winter mornings at home: tops, leggings and full sets in brushed fleece, merino blends or cotton, for men, women and kids.

Thermals for standing still or climbing

Thermals do two different jobs, and the right set depends on how much you move. For cold hours standing around at camp, by the car or on a chairlift, go for the thick brushed styles. The mens thermals set is an extra thick 350 g/m² polyester with a soft brushed inside, and the fleece lined thermals reach 380 g/m², with the fleece bonded to the outer so it stays put under pack straps. Wear them under the shirts and jackets in our hiking clothes.

On a climb you sweat, and a heavy fleece starts working against you. The hiking thermals use a two-layer build, brushed fleece inside and a tightly knitted outer that moves sweat away, so the fabric doesn't turn clammy on the way up. The running thermals are knitted with no seams in nylon, polyester and elastane, with mesh zones on the chest, back and sides. After the walk, a thermal top also sits well under a bomber jacket for a cold evening in town.

Sets for the snow

A week at the snow calls for a set that holds heat on the lift and dries out between runs. The ski thermals are a two-piece set made for snowboarding, a long-sleeve top and ankle-length leggings with a brushed fleece inside. The mens ski thermals are knitted in the round with no side seam to rub on long tours. The womens ski thermals use a 3D knit made in one piece, with compression zones at the hips, lower back and knees, and raglan sleeves that let your arms move easily.

Merino, cotton and the right size

A merino base layer is the pick for several days on the track without a wash, since merino keeps odour down. The womens base layer mixes 16% merino with lyocell and polyamide, and the womens merino t shirt is 27.5% merino. The cotton thermals are a 100% cotton top and long johns for mild winter days between 0 and 15 °C, better suited to the house or bed than a sweaty climb. For bigger frames, the plus size thermal underwear runs from L to 6XL with a wide, flat waistband that doesn't dig in, and the kids thermals come in sizes from 5-6 to 13-14 years.

Keep the fit close so nothing bunches under the next layer. Thermal pants slide under our hiking pants on a frosty morning, and the top comes off easily at lunch if the day warms up.
