Softshell Jackets

Softshell jackets that block the wind and shed a passing shower, with fleece or mesh linings for cool mornings, plus a softshell vest and a 3-in-1 with a zip-out fleece liner.

What a softshell jacket does well

A softshell jacket suits cold, windy days with the odd shower, when a full rain shell would be more than you need. The tactical one here uses a shark skin fabric in polyester with a little spandex for stretch. Its scaled texture blocks the wind and lets moisture vapour out, and there is no glued membrane to peel away. Inside, a brushed fleece and mesh lining holds the warmth. It comes in camouflage, black camouflage, black, grey or green, up to 4XL. Wear it over a base layer and the rest of our hiking clothes on a cool-season walk.

The mens softshell jacket in navy blue is mid-weight polyester that holds in body heat, and its outer is treated to shed sudden showers on hikes in the wet season. The tactical fleece jacket takes a different route, with a dense polyester fleece that blocks the wind and breathes, and a shaped cut that lets you move. If you want a jacket for town more than the track, a bomber jacket gives you a shorter, more casual shape.

When the rain sets in

A softshell sheds showers, but it will not keep out a full day of rain. For wetter weather, the womens 3-in-1 waterproof jacket pairs a PU-coated polyester shell with a removable zipped fleece liner, giving you three ways to wear it as the weather changes. The fleece lined rain jacket keeps things simpler, with a brushed fleece lining, a fixed hood that stays put in the wind and an outer suited to drizzle.

Vests, heat and the field look

For a lighter layer, the mens softshell vest has a water-resistant nylon shell with mesh panels inside and concealed zipped pockets. It goes on quickly and packs away easily, and you can pick a reversible version or a single layer. Wear it as a mid layer in spring and autumn, or on its own when the wind picks up. On the coldest mornings, the men's heated jacket has heating zones front and back, run from two separate buttons inside.

Black is the most common colour, with green, grey, blue and khaki on other styles and light purple on the women's 3-in-1. If you like the field look, wear the green or grey tactical softshell over a camo shirt and keep the zip half open while you warm up.
