The first thing to settle on a tactical backpack is how much you carry and for how long. At the small end, the 10L camo pack holds a day's basics, and the pocket-sized pack with webbing points clips onto a belt or a bigger pack. Between 30 and 40 litres you get a pack for a long day or a light overnighter, like the 3 day pack or the 35 litre black pack. The bigger military backpacks hold 36 to 55 litres and use compression straps to pull the load in when they are half full. To build out a full setup, the rest of our tactical gear has pouches and bags that clip onto the outside.
A loaded pack is only as comfortable as its harness. The 40 litre pack has chest and waist straps that move weight off your shoulders and onto your hips over distance. Several packs pair padded shoulder straps with a padded or shaped back, and one uses air-cushion shoulder straps. The black pack has a breathable back, which you notice on a hot walk. With a tactical vest holding the small items on your chest, a smaller pack is often enough.
MOLLE webbing lets you add pouches over time instead of buying a bigger pack, and the tan, black and 40 litre packs all carry it. Many shells are Oxford fabric in 800D or 900D, described as water resistant on several listings, and the army green pack adds a PVC coating. Two packs open the main compartment to 180 degrees, so you see everything at once instead of digging from the top. The tactical daypack has a rain cover built in for when the weather turns.
Colours run from black, green and khaki to brown, grey and camo patterns including digital desert and python. The vintage backpack goes the other way, with a cotton and polyester body and a plain zip closure. If you want a pack without the tactical look at all, our backpacks include hiking packs, daypacks and duffles.
