A pop up tent carries its frame inside the fabric, so it opens on its own the moment it leaves the bag. There are no poles to thread and no tools to hunt for, which is the appeal at a festival or when you roll into a campsite after dark. A light dome catches the wind like a kite, so peg it out before you unload the rest of your camping gear.
On the models that list it, the frame is fibreglass, either pre-attached poles or a spring frame. Folding one back into its bag is the part that takes practice, so have a go in the backyard before the first trip. For a tent with separate poles, see our full tent range.
Go by the floor size rather than the number printed on the bag. The 2 person pop up tent is a 200 by 100 cm dome, full lying length for one or two, made for day hikes. The 3 person model gives you 200 by 150 cm and weighs 2.35 kg in its carry bag, enough room for two adults and their gear. The 4 person version opens to 210 by 200 cm with 130 cm of headroom and a roof vent.
For families, the family pop up tent comes in a 2 to 3 and a 3 to 4 person size, both domes with room to sit up. The 6 person camping tent, sold in four and six person sizes, has a 280 by 280 cm living space with four windows and a double door. The large camping tent spreads over 270 by 235 cm with 150 cm of height.
Several have a silver-coated fabric. On the quick pitch camping tent the coating lines both sides of a double layer to hold back heat and light rain, and the whole tent weighs about 800 g. The large camping tent is double layer too, with Oxford 210D on the outside. At the light end, the ultralight three person tent comes in around 1 kg and is made for summer, with minimal waterproofing, while the family tent is water-repellent.
When steady rain is forecast, take a double-layer model and turn the door away from the wind. Once camp is up, the next job is a brew on a camping stove, a few metres from the door.
