A self inflating mattress puts a layer between you and the ground, and the thickness of that layer decides how the night goes. These mats fill in two ways. Foam models draw air in on their own once you open the valve, and the mat with pillow self-inflates in under 60 seconds. Others have the pump in the mat itself: the mattress with built-in pump, made for the campsite or the beach, is ready after 10 foot pumps, and the two person sleeping mat fills by foot as well. On a cool night, a breath or two at the valve tops up a foam mat to the firmness you like.
Couples get a choice of widths. The inflatable double camping mattress is 196 x 125 x 9 cm with a composite fabric top, soft yet hard-wearing, and takes up to 200 kg. The two person sleeping mat is 200 x 120 cm, with a diamond structure that keeps it steady when one of you rolls over. Widest of all is the queen self inflating mattress at 192 x 157 cm, 3 cm thick in dense, textured polyester, weighing 3.4 kg.
