Torches

Torches for the keyring, the pocket and the camp box, from a 38g pen torch to zoom models on 18650 cells, most of them charged by cable instead of throwaway batteries.

Choosing a torch for where it lives

The torch you grab in a blackout is the one within reach, so start with where yours will be kept. The green keychain torch weighs under 30 g and rides on your keys. The pen torch is aluminium alloy at 38g, with USB-C charging and a zoom you work with one hand. When you need both hands for pitching a tent or cooking, a head torch does the job better.

Mid-size models suit a pocket or the glovebox. The lightweight torch in gold or black is under 10 cm long, and its beam both focuses and rotates. The white model with a flat lens is a torch and a power bank in one, so it can top up your phone. Solar lights and chargers sit in our torches and solar gear.

Batteries and charging

Most of the range charges by cable, so you stop buying packs of AAA cells. Several models run on an 18650, a common lithium cell size. The aluminium model comes with its battery and a charging cable, the police torch takes one too, and the gold or black LED torch gives a steady 300 lumens and recharges in 2 to 4 hours. The long range torch uses a larger 26650 cell, sold in black with or without the battery. The long battery life model has a 5800mAh battery and an LCD display. A torch kept for emergencies loses charge in the drawer, so top it up before storm season.

Zoom, modes and build

A zoom beam changes how you use the light. On the small torch, the high power torch and the long range model, you narrow the beam to look down a track or widen it to light up camp. The small torch adds a side light panel for close work, and the black tactical torch has five modes, including SOS and strobe. Most bodies are aluminium alloy. The spotlight torch, a chunky hand-held light, uses ABS and is listed as water resistant and shock resistant. It comes boxed with a charger and a car cigarette lighter adapter for the ute.

A few lights sit between a torch and a lantern. The camping lamp torch in yellow or orange has high, low, side lighting, red and SOS modes, so it works as a camping torch on the walk to the amenities block and lights up the tent once you're inside. For light that fills the whole campsite, hang a camping light from the awning.
