Cargo shorts get worn hard through an Australian summer, so sort out the length and waist before you worry about colour. The pairs here start high above the knee and go down past it on the 3/4 and long styles. On the track, a loose shirt from our hiking clothes goes well on top.
Many of the mens cargo shorts here are sized by waist, from 29 up to 42 on some pairs, while others use letters from XS to 3XL. The long cargo shorts have a relaxed fit through the seat and thighs, and a few styles save you hunting for a belt: the mens khaki shorts have an adjustable elastic belt and the yellow cargo shorts have one built in. For the same pockets in a full leg, see our cargo pants.
Cotton is the most common choice. The khaki shorts and the long cargo shorts are 100% cotton, which breathes in the heat, and the chino shorts add some stretch so you can climb and step up without the fabric pulling. The khaki pair takes its shape from classic military shorts and has a vintage look. The plaid cargo shorts mix soft cotton with polyester, so they stay light and easy to care for.
For tougher days, look at the hiking cargo shorts. Their high-density polyester and cotton blend is made to resist tearing and dries quickly, and 8 pockets keep your things sorted. The mens 3/4 cargo shorts have 6 pockets and enough polish for smart workwear. If you want army shorts with a clear tactical look, the yellow cargo shorts add camo panels and large flap pockets on the thighs.
Some pairs are made for easy days. The camo gym shorts are a 2-in-1 polyester design that works for training and for a swim, and the boys camo shorts have an elastic waist for kids aged 4 to 11. The women's cargo shorts come in military green or black, in a breathable cotton and polyester blend. The black elastic waist shorts are simple to look after: wash them cold in the machine or by hand.
Plenty of people keep their shorts on right through winter. If that is you, throw a puffer jacket over a tee for the early starts and leave the long pants in the drawer.
