Waterproof pants are built in different ways, so look for a water column, a membrane or taped seams on the product before you plan around steady rain. The men's waterproof hiking pants list a 3000 mm water column with fully taped seams and a polar fleece lining for autumn and winter. The warm waterproof pants put a 5000mm membrane inside a three-layer softshell, and the trekking pair is waterproof to 8000mm with four-way stretch. Under any of them, a quick-dry shirt from our hiking clothes keeps the outfit light.
Plenty of pairs here are water-repellent rather than sealed. The mens softshell pants and the stretch hiking pants handle showers, dry fast and breathe better on a climb, but keep them for changeable days rather than hours of downpour. Some pairs go on over what you're already wearing. One over pant comes with a zip-out fleece liner, so you wear the shell alone in a mild autumn and add the liner in winter.
