Hammocks

Hammocks in parachute nylon or open mesh, for one person or two, from compact styles that fold into their own pouch to models with a built-in bug net or rain fly.

Choosing a hammock for the bush or the backyard

A hammock gets you off wet or rocky ground, which helps in the bush where a flat, dry spot for a tent is hard to find. Much of the range is 210T parachute nylon, light and soft against the skin. A parachute hammock also packs small: one compact model folds to 20 x 16 cm and weighs 520 g, so it slips into the pack beside the rest of your camping gear.

In mosquito country, from the tropical north to a creek bank in summer, pick a style with an integrated net. One zips open on both sides, another lifts the mesh off your face on flexible pole arcs. For full cover with net and canopy in one setup, browse our hammock tents.

Room for one or two

Most beds are 260 x 140 cm or 290 x 140 cm. That is wide enough to lie on the diagonal instead of curling into a banana, which is the trick to a flat night. A double hammock lets two people sit side by side, or one person stretch out with kit, and the two-person styles hold between 200 and 300 kg depending on the model. Some have triple-stitched seams at the hanging points. Colours go from camouflage and army green to sky blue, orange and pink.

Not every model is fabric. The garden hammock is knotted open mesh that dries quickly after a shower, and the triangle styles use open mesh that lets air through on hot days. The giant triangle hammock spans 4 x 4 x 4 m and holds up to 300 kg, enough for a few people at once.

Staying dry and warm off the ground

Off the ground you stay clear of damp soil, but cool air moves under the fabric, so on winter or alpine nights lay a sleeping mat inside the bed. When rain is on the way, the camping hammock with rain fly comes with a fly, a guy line and a ground stake. The hammock with tarp has a removable canopy you can pitch over the bed or lay on the ground.

Every hammock needs two solid anchor points, trees or posts, with enough gap between them to hang the bed. Straps and carabiners come with most models. On open ground in the outback, where there is nothing to hang from, take one of our camping tents instead.
