Each fire starter in this collection either throws sparks or makes a small flame, and which one suits you depends on how you like to work. The rope lighter and the flint lighter both turn a wheel to throw sparks onto a thick cotton cord, which then glows like an ember, with no fuel and no flame. The rest of the kit for a night out is in our survival gear.
Instead of a box of waterproof matches, the permanent match is a metal body that holds the fuel, with a rod that gives a flame when you strike it, on a key ring. The survival fire starter is a water resistant lighter in a box, tube or capsule shape. Keep either one in the same pouch as a first aid kit.
If you like doing it the old way, the fire piston is brass and aluminium alloy, small enough for a pocket, and it needs only a handful of dry grass to get a fire going. The bow drill fire starter is three pieces of solid wood, one of them running on a bearing as you work the drill. Both take practice, which is half the fun.
The spark rod hangs on a neck cord and has a ruler, a bottle opener and a scraper on it as well. The plasma model lights when your finger touches the sensor, in black, red, blue or gold. Put a spark source and a flame source together and you have a simple fire starter kit, tied to your pack with a length of paracord.
